The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Glenn C. Smith (ASN: 20605106), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 24 March 1944. Displaying resourcefulness and a high degree of courage, Sergeant Smith directed accurate fire which knocked out an enemy heavy machine gun, killing all five of its crew. Later, he exposed himself to kill with hand grenades and rifle fire some twenty Japanese soldiers who were placing devastating fire on three American pillboxes. Sergeant Smith’s gallant action, under extremely hazardous conditions, contributed materially to the ultimate repulse of the enemy attack on our perimeter positions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Smith, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
