    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 355 (August 14, 1951), Amended by G. O. No. 101 (1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Donald F Smith (ASN: 0-2207259), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 June 1951, near Unchon-ni, Korea, Company A, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, to which Lieutenant Smith was attached as a forward artillery observer, attacked and drove the enemy from positions on Hill 466, but was soon subjected to an aggressive counterattack, before being able to consolidate a defense perimeter in the newly captured area. Suffering a number of casualties, among whom were the platoon leaders and several ranking non-commissioned officers, the company, temporarily deprived of stable leadership, tended to disperse under the intense pressure of the severe enemy assault. Lieutenant Smith, realizing the danger of the situation, immediately took charge of the advance infantry platoon, its complement much reduced by casualties and effectively reorganized it, enabling the unit to successfully participate in containing the hostile attack. Lieutenant Smith’s gallant and singular act of leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
