Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Orders No. 478 (March 17, 1965)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas Hugh Baker (ASN: 0-1936513), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Baker distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 November 1964. On this date he was serving as Advisor to the 2d Battalion, 49th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Four battalions of the 25th Infantry Division had moved to prearranged positions in the bend of the Viaco Oriental River to trap and destroy the 506th Viet Cong Battalion. The 2d Battalion of the 49th Regiment was heliborne into the combat area to seal the trap. During an attempt by the Viet Cong to break through the 2d Battalion, the friendly unit came under a barrage of machine gun, 57-mm. recoilless rifle and 81-mm. mortar fire. Captain Baker immediately analyzed the situation and called for all the friendly fire support available, utilizing and directing fire of armed helicopters, strike aircraft and artillery on the advancing enemy less than 70 meters from his position. Though subjected to small arms and mortar fire, Captain Baker remained in his exposed position on top of the dikes to better view the situation and direct the fire. His calm and cool manner and courageous actions not only prevented heavy friendly casualties but inspired the men of the battalion to hold their ground and inflict very heavy casualties on the Viet Cong. Captain Baker’s conspicuous gallantry was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
