The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Alberton E. Smith (ASN: ER-31217185), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date Company A was attacking heavily fortified enemy positions when the unit was forced to halt due to lack of ammunition. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Smith voluntarily carried the necessary ammunition to the forward elements. In so doing he constantly exposed himself to intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, mortar and artillery fire and on numerous occasions it was necessary for Sergeant Smith, in order to reach his men, to throw hand grenades thereby inflicting heavy enemy casualties. On his return trips, Sergeant Smith carried wounded men back to the rear areas where they could receive medical attention. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Sergeant Smith reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
