Raymond Sloan, the first Clemson University graduate to be killed in World War II, died of wounds received on Bataan one day after he was promoted to Captain. His Clemson ring was removed by a Japanese soldier and pawned. A Clemson graduate discovered and redeemed the ring, and it was returned to Clemson where it now occupies a place of honor.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Air Corps) Raymond Anderson Sloan (ASN: 0-377421), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 17th Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group, Far East Air Forces, in operations in the Philippine Islands, in 1942. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Sloan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
