    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 179 (June 7, 1951), Amended by G.O. 469 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Walter G. Slack (ASN: RA-18324692), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 14 February 1951, near Chunjang-ni, Korea, the third platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, was attacked by a large enemy force. Sergeant Slack repeatedly exposed himself in moving from position to position instructing and encouraging his comrades. Although severely wounded during the engagement, he remained and administered first aid to his wounded platoon leader. When an enemy soldier attacked his platoon leader, Sergeant Slack fought the soldier barehanded and, after momentarily stunning him, seized the enemy’s weapon and killed him, thereby saving the platoon leader’s life. He courageously assisted the medical personnel in caring for the wounded until he was ordered to return to a place of safety and receive medical attention himself. Sergeant Slack’s gallant actions and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
