The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Master Sergeant Henry J. Skinger (ASN: RA-31312002), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with an Infantry Company of the 279th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy near Nae-ri, Korea. On 9 July 1953, Sergeant Skinger was supervising his communication platoon in its main battle positions during a heavy enemy attack. Realizing the desperate situation as the attack became stronger, he began assisting with the evacuation of the wounded. Fully aware of the personal danger involved, Sergeant Skinger moved forward into a firing position, exposing himself to enemy fire to provide cover for removal of the injured. His determined and courageous action in leveling a steady spray of fire at the advancing foe, despite the great risk, aided immeasurably in the successful evacuation of the casualties. Sergeant Skinger’s gallant action and disregard for his safety reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
