The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Thomas H. Singletary (ASN: ER-38556188), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 May 1951, in the vicinity of Pungchony-ni, Korea. On that day Company L had the mission of defending Hill 737 against an expected enemy counter-attack. After the company had dug into its position and completed preparation for the defense of the hill, the enemy launched a fanatical attack in force. Sergeant Singletary, completely disregarding his own safety, personally directed the fire of his platoon and, as ammunition ran low, carried ammunition to the platoon’s machine gun, enabling it to continue its deadly fire on the attacking enemy. Sergeant Singletary held his position until all his ammunition was exhausted and then he started throwing grenades at the advancing enemy. On one occasion he worked his way under enemy fire, to the side of a wounded man and carried the soldier to a place of safety. Sergeant Singletary’s devotion to duty, outstanding leadership and courage reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
