Lieutenant Colonel Simpson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from September to November 1966. While serving as Executive Officer of the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Lieutenant Colonel Simpson was helilifted to assume command of the 1st Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment after the battalion had suffered heavy casualties and its commander had been wounded during Operation ATTLEBORO. He led his battalion throughout that operation, and subsequently through air assaults in Operations CEDAR FALLS and JUNCTION CITY. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Simpson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William Craton Screven Simpson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company I, 3d Battalion 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea, on 9 March 1951. During the attack on Hill 1040, the company commanded by Captain Simpson met heavy mortar, machine gun, and small arms fire, and was pinned down unable to advance farther. Captain Simpson, disregarding his own personal safety, walked back and forth across the ridge encouraging and deploying his men, while the enemy raked the ground he walked on. This fine show of bravery and leadership rallied his men so that they exerted themselves into a final push which enabled them to capture their objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Simpson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
