Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 150 (May 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Leonard D. Simpson (ASN: 0-46128), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, was attacking Hill 337. In order to coordinate more closely the attacks of subordinate units, Major Simpson left the comparative safety of the Battalion Observation Post and made his way forward under continuous fire from enemy small arms and mortars to the front line position occupied by Company B. Upon finding that the attack of that unit was virtually stalled by intense fire from well concealed enemy positions, he obtained permission to halt the attack momentarily in that sector. He then made his way to several subsequent positions from which he ascertained the exact location of the enemy, and, while still under fire, he personally directed accurate artillery concentrations upon them so effectively that the volume of incoming fire noticeably decreased. Major Simpson then joined the leading elements of the company and inspired his men to resume their attack and gain their objective. In doing so, he moved from man to man and was constantly exposed to enemy fire. Major Simpson’s gallant actions and inspirational leadership reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
