The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George L. Simpson (ASN: RA-13167103), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (Motorized), 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 February 1951, near Kyungyan-ni, Korea, Corporal Simpson was a member of an armored task force with the mission to destroy an enemy command post. Upon arriving behind the enemy lines, the force was ambushed and receiving heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire. When the machine gunner on the vehicle was unable to make his weapon function properly, Corporal Simpson exposed himself to enemy fire and aided in the repair of the gun. During the adjusting of the machine gun, the gunner was wounded. Corporal Simpson then completed the task of repairing the gun and immediately manned it inflicting many casualties on the enemy until seriously wounded, thereby aiding the task force to accomplish its mission. Through his courageous actions, he was instrumental in saving the lives of many of his companions and valuable equipment. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Simpson reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
