The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Service Corps) Tom A. Simmons (ASN: 0-2047499), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Medical Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. When the Battalion Aid Station was overrun by enemy tanks in the vicinity of Yongdong, Korea, on 24 July 1950, medical personnel attached to the station were forced to displace to the collecting station. Shortly after arrival at the latter point, the medical officer was seriously wounded. Aware of the critical situation which existed as a result of the loss of the aid station and the medical officer, Captain Simmons organized the remaining members of the original aid station group and moved forward through intense hostile fire and established an aid station near the front lines. Although repeatedly subjected to heavy concentrations of enemy fire, he remained at his post for 36 hours, withdrawing only when the position became untenable after all other elements of the unit had displaced to new positions. Captain Simmons’ initiative, exemplary leadership and outstanding devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Medical Service of the United States Army.
