The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Bonifacio Silverio (ASN: RA-6738462), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 near Sibi-ri, South Korea. On that date, Sergeant Silverio, while setting up a defensive perimeter as part of a United Nations effort to contain a North Korean bridgehead on the Naktong River, observed a 1/4 Ðton truck mistakenly pass through friendly lines. When it approached the enemy positions it was suddenly hit by small arms and mortar fire which forced the men to abandon the vehicle and seek cover in a rice paddy. Seeing the men helplessly pinned down, and with total disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Silverio ran the 500 yards to the vehicle, seized and fired its 57-mm recoilless rifle at nearly point-blank range into the enemy positions to cover the men as they remounted their vehicle and drove the truck to safety under accurate covering fire. This daring rescue of his comrades was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service.
