Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 324 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Benjamin S. Silver (ASN: 0-39427), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the period 28 November to 2 December 1950, near Tongyang, Korea, a battalion of the 3d Korean Marine Corps was surrounded and completely cut off by a numerically superior enemy force. Upon learning that the unit had suffered heavy casualties, Captain Silver volunteered to evacuate the wounded and transport vitally needed rations and ammunition. Piloting a liaison type aircraft, he flew four missions over mountainous terrain and landed on an extremely short airstrip which was constantly subjected to hostile small arms and mortar fire. Through his courageous actions, four critically wounded infantrymen were evacuated to safety where they received prompt medical attention. Captain Silver’s exceptional gallantry and professional skill reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
