The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph F. Sigona (ASN: US-51056743), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Corporal Sigona was a squad leader of a machine gun section which was supporting a friendly unit assaulting a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. During this action, devastating fire from well-entrenched hostile forces threatened to stall the advancing friendly units. Realizing the necessity of close supporting fire, Corporal Sigona, setting an example of personal bravery, led his section to a most forward position. From this point, with complete disregard for his personal safety and the intense enemy fire, he moved among his men shouting words of encouragement and directing their fire. His fearless actions and aggressive leadership so inspired the members of his unit that they were able to inflict numerous casualties upon the enemy. As a result, the friendly units were able to advance and secure their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Sigona on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
