The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Marvin N. Siddle (ASN: 0-984408), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, Division Artillery, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 12 March 1952, Lieutenant Siddle voluntarily flew an unarmed liaison type aircraft to an area approximately eleven miles beyond the Division’s main line of resistance in the vicinity of Kyodong, Korea. He reconnoitered an enemy built up area and brought numerous targets under the fire of a battery of 155 millimeter guns, which had been moved to a forward position solely for this mission. Due to prior knowledge that the area was well defended by hostile anti-aircraft weapons, Lieutenant Siddle anticipated and skillfully avoided the almost continual barrage of fire which he received throughout the three hour period he was airborne. Locating a supply area, a vehicle park, numerous camouflaged positions and troop personnel, he accurately directed the long range guns in destroying the enemy supplies and positions, including four anti-aircraft guns. After exhausting all profitable enemy targets and having a critically low fuel supply, he returned to his base. Lieutenant Siddle’s gallantry and superb devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
