The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bion Quinton Shutts (ASN: 0-39472), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Shutts organized and led a group of approximately twelve men in an effort to rescue two squads of his rifle company then pinned down by enemy machine gun fire. Although wounded in the head, he continued to advance under intense enemy artillery, mortar, and automatic weapons fire, forcing the enemy to vacate their positions and allowing the trapped quads to continue the attack. While in direct line of enemy fire he continued to improve the situation until he was again wounded, this time mortally. The dauntless courage and gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Shutts on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
