The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Robert S. Shumway (ASN: RA-15298079), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date Company I had the mission to attack fanatically held hostile emplacements on Hill 1179. As the assault materialized, friendly forces met heavy hostile resistance. Corporal Shumway, an automatic rifleman, took his weapon and advanced in the face of the intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire. Driven back twice in his attempt to encircle the enemy’s position, Corporal Shumway, now using a M1 Rifle, continued in his attempt with fierce determination. During the ensuing action, his platoon was ordered to withdraw to reorganize. Corporal Shumway, with complete disregard for his personal safety, voluntarily remained behind and fought a rear-guard action, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy, thus enabling his unit to conduct a safe and orderly withdrawal. When his unit had regrouped and launched a renewed assault, he rejoined his platoon. Greatly inspired by Corporal Shumway’s display of courage and devotion to duty his comrades advanced and after a bitter battle, succeeded in securing their objective. Corporal Shumway’s example of individual bravery aided immeasurably to the final conquest of Hill 1179 after some of the most intense offensive action the Division had undergone. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Shumway was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
