The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Dallas D. Shumate (ASN: RA-15422154), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 March 1951, in the vicinity of Uijongbu, Korea, while his unit was engaged in making an assault on strongly-held enemy positions, Sergeant Shumate took command when the platoon leader was seriously wounded. Because of the severity of the enemy fire, nearly all the platoon had sought cover but Sergeant Shumate, with no regard for his personal safety, dashed alone through heavy fire toward an enemy entrenchment. After pulling the pin from a grenade, he hesitated momentarily before throwing it into the entrenchment, and the grenade exploded almost immediately, killing an enemy soldier who attempted to hurl it back. Sergeant Shumate then jumped into the trench and single-handedly bayoneted two enemy soldiers. His gallant actions so inspired the members of his platoon that they left their cover and successfully assaulted Hill 155, originally the objective for the whole company, killing approximately thirty enemy soldiers in fierce hand-to-hand combat. The outstanding bravery and leadership displayed by Sergeant Shumate reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
