The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Geroge M. Shuffer, Jr. (ASN: 0-59029), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 March 1951. First Lieutenant Shuffer’s company launched an assault crossing of the Han Rover near Mt. Yobong, Korea. Although his troops were initially disorganized by the swirling current and intense hostile fire, he quickly consolidated the bridgehead position and led an attack on the strongpoints of the enemy. Repeatedly exposing himself to a devastating automatic weapons and mortar barrage, he moved among his men to direct more effectively their movement and fire. When the enemy counterattacked on the following day and secured commanding ground, he reorganized his force and directed it to more tenable positions. Securing an exposed vantage point, he directed artillery fire with such deadly accuracy that his men soon regained the initiative and drove the foe to flight. First Lieutenant Shuffer’s valorous leadership, indomitable spirit and unremitting devotion to duty enhance the high traditions of the United States Army.
