The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Hardin C. Short (ASN: 0-1332426), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Lieutenant Short was acting Company Commander for a special mission assigned to Company G. After gaining the initial objective, he continued to press forward until halted by devastating enemy mortar, small arms fire, and demolition charges. Although repeatedly exposed to heavy enemy fire, he completely ignored his own safety to direct the actions of the company. Refusing evacuation although wounded several times and temporarily blinded in one eye, he returned to the heaviest fighting, shouting words of encouragement to his men and directing their actions, insuring the successful completion of the mission and the evacuation of friendly casualties. His determination, courage, and concern for his men, although in dire need of medical attention himself, was an inspiration to the entire company. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Short reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
