The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Joseph H. Shobe (ASN: US-1613226), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9i4, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 August 1951 in the vicinity of Changga-Hyon, Korea. On this date an enemy force fanatically attacked and attempted to overrun an outpost position held by friendly units. Sergeant Shobe, platoon leader, made a strategic withdrawal which confused the enemy and curtailed its attack. Reorganizing his men he led them in a daring counterattack, successfully regaining their positions. At this time Sergeant Shobe received orders to break through an enemy ambush attempting to infiltrate between two friendly positions. As the unit advanced intense enemy fire wounded several of the men and endangered the remainder. Leaving his men in positions of safety, Sergeant Shobe continued alone to his objective, where he set up an automatic weapon and began to fire constantly and accurately upon the enemy forces. Although painfully wounded, Sergeant Shobe continued his action until reinforcements arrived. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Shobe on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
