Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 329 (November 13, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert T. Shirah (ASN: RA-44032917), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 September 1950, when the battalion headquarters installations near Hoeman, Korea, were attack by numerically superior hostile forces which had penetrated the battalion perimeter, Corporal Shirah manned a .50 caliber machine gun to deliver withering fire at the attackers. When a stoppage occurred, he braved the intense enemy fire to run to a supply vehicle for tools, return to his weapon, disperse the enemy with hand grenades, until he could repair the weapon, and continued his devastating fire to repulse the attack. Corporal Shirah’s conspicuous courage and outstanding devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
