Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 231 (August 21, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class George L. Shields, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 June 1951 near Korimdong, Korea. As his platoon attacked up the steep slope, it was suddenly pinned down by enemy grenades. Sergeant Shields, though painfully wounded, maneuvered his way through intense enemy fire toward an enemy position and destroyed it with two well-aimed grenades. Observing two other hostile entrenchments that were obstructing the success of the mission, he silenced them with his automatic weapon, capturing two enemy soldiers. This aggressive action inspired members of the platoon to greater efforts and materially aided in the accomplishment of the mission. Sergeant Shields’ gallantry reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
