The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Andrew Shields (ASN: RA-20538999), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During a six-hour attack by numerically superior hostile forces on the night of 2 – 3 September 1950, near Malsan-ni, Korea, Corporal Shields’ outpost squad was cut off from the company. Heedless of severe hostile fire, he repeatedly exposed himself better to direct the fire of his squad, which inspired by his example of courage and determination, held their position. When the enemy was about to overrun the area, Corporal Shields remained in place to cover the withdrawal of his men. While delivering heavy fire into the attacking forces and inflicting numerous casualties, he was killed. Corporal Shields’ outstanding and gallant leadership and superb soldierly ability reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
