The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Nobumi Shibao (ASN: US-50003604), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 25 November 1952, elements of Company I, 3d Battalion, of which Corporal Shibao was a member, was assigned the mission of defending friendly positions on Hill “270” and “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. The friendly elements on Hill “270” were subjected to hostile mortar and automatic weapons fire almost simultaneously with the forces on “Jackson Heights”. When the forces on “Jackson Heights” called for flares to illuminate the area, Corporal Shibao exposed himself to the enemy fire as he dashed across the intensely shelled terrain to his mortar. Although seriously wounded, he remained at his mortar, firing illuminating flares which allowed his fellow soldiers to see the charging foe and repel the attack. Corporal Shibao’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
