The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Johnnie H. Sherrod (ASN: RA-3812744), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 September 1950 near Harmon, Korea, when the assault platoon was subjected to intense hostile small arms, mortar and artillery fire, Sergeant First Class Sherrod was wounded by shell fragments. Heedless of his painful wound, he carried from the area a comrade who had been wounded in both legs. Before reaching safety, he was again wounded, but succeeded in carrying his comrade to safety. Sergeant First Class Sherrod’s indomitable courage and selfless devotion to his comrade reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
