The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roland K. Sherman (ASN: RA-17280760), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Private Sherman, a gunner in a mortar squad which was part of a patrol attempting to establish contact with an adjacent friendly patrol, was wounded when the patrol received heavy fire from the enemy. Despite his painful injury and with no regard for his personal safety, he took charge of the remaining enlisted personnel. He organized them and returned effective fire on the enemy. Private Sherman remained behind after the order to withdraw was given until all personnel had withdrawn to safety. The bravery and heroism displayed by Private Sherman on this occasion and under his condition reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
