The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Edward J. Sheridan, Jr. (ASN: RA-11112262), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 6 July 1952, the 1st Platoon of Company I was occupying defensive positions on an outpost known as “Nori” approximately 1200 yards forward of the friendly main line of resistance near Samgwan-Ni, Korea, when the entire area was brought under terrific enemy artillery and mortar fire. During the bombardment, an estimated enemy company surrounded the outpost and cut through the barbed wire defenses, making ready for a ground assault. Immediately after the barrage lifted the foe made a fanatical charge through the openings in the wire, laying down a devastating hail of automatic weapons, small arms and grenade fire. The enemy onslaught overwhelmed the outer defenses and pushed the friendly troops back, confused and disorganized. Disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Sheridan, the Platoon Sergeant, moved about the shell-torn area, shouting words of encouragement to his men and directing their fire on the relentless foe. After getting them reorganized, Sergeant Sheridan led a smashing counterattack against the hostile force and successfully drove the foe from the outpost. During this vicious hand-to-hand combat Sergeant Sheridan wounded and captured the enemy leader and personally accounted for three enemy dead. The outstanding gallantry and leadership displayed by Sergeant Sheridan reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
