Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 505 (December 24, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Auden L. Sherberg (ASN: 0-1924859), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company (then Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment), 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 and 21 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Sherberg was leading the 2d Platoon of Company F in an attack upon Hill 266, “Old Baldy”. Shortly after crossing the Main Line of Resistance the unit was enveloped in a lethal cross-fire from enemy automatic weapons and an intense barrage from enemy mortar and artillery inflicting heavy casualties upon them and separating them into small groups. Lieutenant Sherberg with complete disregard for personal safety, repeatedly exposed himself to the deadly enemy fire, as he set about methodically regrouping the company and, although wounded by an exploding enemy mortar round, succeeded in transforming the group into an efficient, well-disciplined fighting unit once again. He issued orders directing his men to collect all available ammunition in surrounding positions and after personally supervising the evacuation of the wounded he set about making preparations for the renewed assault upon the treacherous enemy holding the objective. He deployed the company and started up the steep slope through an ever increasing barrage of enemy fire. He stealthily approached each enemy bunker in his path, hurling hand grenades inside and spraying the remaining enemy with deadly fire from his carbine, succeeding in inflicting heavy casualties up the hostile forces. He forged forward, shouting encouragement to his men and continued his individual assaults upon the Chinese bunkers. Near dawn his unit contacted elements of Company G near the summit of the objective. Throughout the following day Lieutenant Sherberg exhibited great courage in moving from position to position, reorganizing and coordinating the preparation against the anticipated counter-attack. The outstanding gallantry and consummate devotion to duty of Lieutenant Sherberg reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
