The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class (then Sergeant] Fred M. Shepherd (Sheppard) (ASN: RA-14007535), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 November 1950 Sergeant First Class Sheppard was a squad leader of Company B which had the patrol mission of contacting a Korean Marine Corps Battalion in the vicinity of Majon-ni, North Korea. En route the patrol was suddenly attacked by superior enemy forces. In the initial outburst of fire many men were wounded. Sergeant First Class Sheppard immediately deployed his squad and directed fire on the enemy positions. Realizing the plight of the wounded personnel lying on exposed terrain, Sergeant First Class Sheppard, completely disregarding his personal safety by exposing himself to intense enemy fire, made his way forward on three separate occasions to aid wounded men to return to safe positions. He then provided covering fire for individuals withdrawing and withdrew himself only after being so ordered by his platoon leader. By his actions the lives of many wounded men were saved. The initiative and heroism displayed by Sergeant First Class Sheppard on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
