The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Coast Artillery Corps) Carl A. Shem, Jr., United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at Live Grenade Range, Camp Pickett, Virginia, on 10 May 1944, when a fragmentation grenade thrown by a soldier struck the parapet and rolled back into the firing pit. Lieutenant Shem, who was then serving in the capacity of instructor, without regard for his own safety and at the risk of his life, raced forward, removed the grenade from underneath the soldier, who was in a prone position, and threw it over the safety parapet which it barely cleared before exploding. His act not only saved the soldier from death or injury but also officers and men within range. The heroism displayed by First Lieutenant Shem on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
