The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Walter Shelton (ASN: RA-34042596), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 3 June 1951, a large enemy force attacked friendly lines near Sasong-ni, Korea, and inflicted several casualties. Sergeant Shelton, immediately responding to the needs of the wounded, rushed to the battle area and proceeded to administer first aid, although he was subjected to severe enemy fire. As the assault continued the enemy at times was only a few feet away, but fearlessly he treated all the wounded. When the hostile force succeeded in overrunning the area, Sergeant Shelton withdrew, but returning with a counterattack, he found all the stricken men whom he had assisted still alive, a fact testifying to the excellent service he had rendered. Sergeant Shelton’s gallant concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
