Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (February 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James E. Shelton (ASN: 0-1319587), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 January 1951 in the vicinity of Wonju, Korea. On that date Captain Shelton was ordered to counterattack an enemy force which had penetrated friendly positions. Knowing that this was the first engagement with the enemy by his company of new replacements, he elected to lead them personally into battle. Exhibiting superb courage and gallant leadership, he encouraged his untried troops to maximum efforts. Although slightly wounded in the foot he continued to control his company’s attack. As the counterattack was nearing its successful completion he was wounded a second time but continued to direct his company until he was evacuated because of the loss of blood. His heroic actions were an inspiration and a guidance to his men and contributed greatly to the success of the counterattack. The gallantry and high degree of leadership displayed by Captain Shelton reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
