Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces, Pacific, General Orders No. 23 (February 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Robert Lee Shaw (ASN: 0-874043), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 7th Weather Squadron, Far East Air Forces, on Angaur, on 25 October 1944. Lieutenant Shaw was asleep at 0430 on the morning of 25 October 1944, when a Japanese soldier, giving a “Banzai” scream, came charging into the officer’s tent firing a pistol. Immediately Lieutenant Shaw awoke, sat up, and lunged out of his bunk toward the intruder who was by now standing in the middle of the tent. A very brief struggle ensued during which Lieutenant Shaw, completely unarmed, succeeded in grasping the enemy tightly and forcing his hand, which held a grenade and land mine, behind its Japanese owner’s hand. In so doing, he knowingly made of himself a human shield, and heroically spared his fellow officers and men of the unit sleeping nearby from fatal injury from either pistol or grenade at the cost of his life.
