The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harold Shaw (ASN: ER-38450240), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 June 1951, E Company’s Third Platoon attacked a cliff-top enemy position which dominated the tactical area around Harang-dong, Korea. Subjected to fierce hostile automatic weapons and mortar fire, the platoon was forced to cease its advance and seek cover. Unable to locate the enemy from the position to which he had withdrawn, Sergeant Shaw fearlessly revealed himself to draw the enemy fire and ascertain the hostile emplacements. Ignoring the cascade of bullets which fell menacingly about him, he remained in the open until he was certain of the weapons’ location. Then finding that the spot where his own machine gun was stationed afforded no field of fire, he, unhesitatingly lifting the weapon and cradling it in his arms, aggressively advanced pouring a deadly hail of fire into the enemy positions. His alert comrades, following his example, rose on both sides of him and charged forward with fixed bayonets. Unheeding burns on his hands and forearm from the searingly hot barrel jacket, Sergeant Shaw continued to lead the furious assault, which slew many of the enemy and captured the hill. The display of superb gallantry and unflinching bravery exhibited by Sergeant Shaw reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
