Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 1089 (July 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William F. Shaver (ASN: 36628307), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 26 and 27 March 1944. While serving as an Aid Man, Private First Class Shaver made numerous sorties beyond the front lines to treat and evacuate wounded comrades. On two occasions, it was necessary for him to face heavy hostile fire while passing litters over a barbed wire fence. He demonstrated great courage and a willingness to endanger his own life to aid his fellow soldiers. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Shaver, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
