Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 594 (October 10, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edward G. Shatto (ASN: RA-28106069), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, while Company K was in the attack to secure a dominating terrain feature, it was halted by intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire. Corporal Shatto, a machine gunner, with complete disregard for his own safety, left his supporting position and advanced towards the enemy using marching fire. When his machine gun failed to fire, he returned to his position and led his squad in a successful assault upon the enemy. As a result of Corporal Shatto’s action the enemy was forced to abandon his well fortified positions. Corporal Shatto inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy, enabling his platoon to advance and secure its objective. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Corporal Shatto on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
