Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 98 (April 16, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Henry Shartsis (ASN: RA-14435961), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 20 November 1952, a platoon of Company I, 3d Battalion, of which Corporal Shartsis was a member, was assigned the mission of assaulting hostile positions on “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. When the platoon was ordered to withdraw to more tenable positions, they regrouped and discovered that the radioman was missing. Corporal Shartsis volunteered to return to the area and find the friendly soldier. Encountering enemy forces, Corporal Shartsis continued searching while a fellow soldier who accompanied him lay down covering fire. Insuring that the radioman was not in the area, the two men rejoined their platoon. Still determined to find the friendly soldier, Corporal Shartsis again exposed himself as he returned to another sector of the hill. Finding the radioman mortally wounded, Corporal Shartsis and his companion carried him across the hostile terrain to friendly lines. Corporal Shartsis’ outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
