Headquarters, EIGHTH U.S. Army, Korea, General Orders No. 59 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) George F. Sharra, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Taegu, Korea, on 22 August 1950. The mission at that time was one of blocking a strong enemy attack on the city and supply routes in the vicinity of Taegu later referred to as “The Battle of Bowling Alley.” The enemy had launched a flanking attack coordinated with heavy mortar and artillery fire on the regiment which endangered the Regimental Command Post. Major Sharra in his capacity as Battalion S-3, voluntarily organized a counterattack force which consisted of one platoon of infantry-mounted tanks. Major Sharra led this force in the Battalion sector which was under heavy attack. Upon reaching this area he displayed unusual courage and leadership by placing his tanks and infantry into positions from which they were able to counterattack and assist in repelling the enemy. The exemplary courage and aggressiveness of Major Sharra under intense enemy fire served as an inspiration to all troops who observed him. His choice of position from which to launch his counterattack was instrumental in maintaining the Battalion position and the eventual accomplishment of a designed mission. The gallant leadership of Major Sharra reflects great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
