The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant David H. Sharkey (ASN: RA-31492703), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 22 February 1952 in the vicinity of Kumwha, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Sharkey when he suddenly observed a group of hostile bunkers, dispersing his men so that they would be able to provide him with effective covering fire, he bravely crept to a position approximately twenty yards from the enemy emplacements, with utter disregard for his own safety. When he fearlessly and accurately threw two hand grenades into one of the hostile machine gun positions, its occupants immediately withdrew, directing a murderous hail of fire toward Sergeant Sharkey’s location. He lay motionless in his partially covered position until he was certain that the bunkers were cleared of all hostile troops. He then personally delivered savage fire upon the enemy, killing one and wounding several others. His action was responsible for inflicting numerous casualties upon the unfriendly forces, and enabled the patrol to successfully complete its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Sharkey reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
