Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 504 (September 3, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dallas L. Shannon (ASN: 0-1334362), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 July 1951, in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date Company A spearheaded an attack on a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. After advancing to almost one hundred yards of the enemy positions, the company was halted by an intense barrage of enemy fire. Seeing an advanced machine gunner and his assistant seriously wounded, Lieutenant Shannon rushed forward, completely exposing himself to enemy observation and fire and manned the gun himself, inflicting numerous casualties. When replaced, he called for a mortar and personally held the tube and directed fire on an enemy machine gun nest until it was destroyed, killing several of the enemy. His outstanding leadership, courage and initiative were largely responsible for the success of the attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Shannon on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
