Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (June 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Frankie W. Shaffier (ASN: RA-16294165), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 February 1951 in the vicinity of Twin Tunnels, Korea. Sergeant Shaffier’s squad, a part of Company L, was dug in on an advanced ridge some distance from the main sector to warn the company of any enemy advance and to force the enemy to deploy. As squad leader, he deployed his squad in a well-selected position to observe the enemy. At dawn the enemy poured up the hill in overwhelming numbers, threatening to overrun the whole sector and the regimental command post. Although he immediately relayed the information to the command post, he remained in position to hold open an escape route for the two friendly platoons. When assured that the two platoons were within friendly lines, Sergeant Shaffier ordered his men to fall back while he covered their withdrawal. While trying to rescue a wounded comrade he was killed by enemy fire. The gallant conduct and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Shaffier reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
