Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 220 (June 26, 1951), Amended by General Orders No. 521 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Virgil Henry Volk (ASN: ER-55015207), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 June 1951 in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that day Company C was leading the 1st Battalion in an attack on Hill 451. Sergeant Yolk was advancing with his platoon when the point squad was fired on by enemy automatic weapons and suffered several casualties. The platoon leader moved forward to organize the platoon to continue the attack and was hit by an enemy grenade. Sergeant Volk assisted in moving the platoon forward and then discovered that his platoon leader and two other wounded men were lying in a position exposed to enemy sniper fire. Without hesitation he moved to their position and succeeded in carrying his platoon leader to safety. He was wounded while doing this, but disregarding his painful wounds, he returned to help the two other wounded men. He received a mortal wound at this time and died while attempting to carry one of the men to safety. Sergeant Volk’s gallantry and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
