The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Corporal] George T. Serafin, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 August 1951 in the vicinity of Worun-ni, Korea. On this date elements of Company H were supporting rifle troops during their assault against strategic positions on Hill 983, occupied by a determined and well entrenched hostile force. As the troops advanced, they were stalled by the intense enemy fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Serafin directed his machine gun section in setting up positions to eliminate the enemy. His accurate fire soon drew concentrations of enemy counter-fire which destroyed a friendly machine gun. Realizing the necessity of fire power, Sergeant Serafin immediately advanced across the fire-swept terrain to obtain another weapon. Heedless of the deadly hail of enemy fire, he returned with the weapon and immediately commenced firing upon the enemy. Through his courageous and selfless actions, the enemy suffered heavy casualties and friendly forces were able to continue their assault and secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Serafin was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
