Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 489 (August 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Sherman M. Seltzer (ASN: 0-61666), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 March 1951, in the vicinity of Pungnam-ni, Korea. On that date he was leading a tank company giving direct fire support to the infantry attacking an entrenched and determined enemy. During the advance, Lieutenant Seltzer’s tank struck a mine and was disabled. In spite of the shock he suffered, he dismounted and made his way through intense enemy fire to the next tank and again led the attack. When the second tank struck a mine, subjecting him to a second severe shock, Lieutenant Seltzer dismounted and moved through heavy enemy fire to his next tank, refusing an offer of relief from the company commander. After ably directing fire on the enemy positions, the third tank struck huge cache of explosives which demolished the tank and caused severe injuries to the entire crew. When aid arrived, although seriously wounded himself, Lieutenant Seltzer insisted that the injuries of his men be treated first, and only after assurances that his men were under treatment did he submit to medical aid. Lieutenant Seltzer’s courage and determination were an inspiration to all and were responsible for the many enemy casualties. The gallant conduct and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Seltzer reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
