Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 189 (April 10, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Raymond William Seegert (ASN: US-55121990), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 January 1952 in the vicinity of Ponggil-li, Korea. On that date, during an assault on positions defended by a well-entrenched and fanatically determined enemy, Sergeant Seegert’s platoon was pinned down by an intense barrage of hostile machine-gun fire. Ignoring all danger to his own life Sergeant Seegert unhesitatingly crept forward toward the enemy machine-gun emplacement under cover fire from his comrades. Using grenades he completely destroyed the position and resumed the assault. Continuing to advance in this heroic manner he was fatally wounded by an enemy grenade. His courageous actions enabled his comrades to resume their advance and secure their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry and intrepidity in action displayed by Sergeant Seegert are in accordance with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
