The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clarence H. Sebring (ASN: RA-6956312), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, (then a member of Ivanhoe Security Force, attached to the 23d Infantry Regiment), 2d Infantry Division, gallantry in action against the enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Corporal Sebring was with a unit in defensive positions preparing for an expected enemy attack. Suddenly the enemy launched a heavy concentration of mortar fire, wounding two of his comrades. Corporal Sebring observed that they were lying in exposed positions and, without hesitating, left the comparative safety of his emplacement to aid the wounded men. In the course of this action he was wounded but, despite the extreme pain, continued on over the fire-swept area to the side of his comrades and succeeded in evacuating one of them to a covered emplacement where adequate medical treatment was maintained. His example of bravery under fire and devotion to comrades were an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Sebring on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
