Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 369 (October 9, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph W. Sease (ASN: RA-37686836), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Private Sease was serving as a member of a volunteer patrol whose mission was to reconnoiter Hill 192 and surrounding area. The patrol was suddenly subjected to a devastating hail of grenade and small arms fire from three sides. Private Sease, with complete disregard for personal safety, constantly exposed himself to the enemy fire in order to encourage his men and direct their fire. During the ensuing twenty-five minute fire fight, Private Sease and his six men killed or wounded twenty-one of the enemy. He then directed the withdrawal of the patrol, while carrying a seriously wounded comrade. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Sease reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
