Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 497 (November 23, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Marcellus Searles (ASN: RA-13161139), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 14 June and early morning hours of 15 June 1953, in the vicinity of Chat-Kol, Korea, enemy forces had attacked and penetrated the United Nations main line of resistance. In order to assist in forcing the foe from these positions, Sergeant Searles volunteered to guide a relief unit to the contested sector to reinforce friendly counterattacking elements. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he courageously led his group up the slope under heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire to advantageous fighting positions. Despite the bombardment, he constantly moved about the impact area, deploying his men and directing their fire. As a result of his brave actions and aggressive leadership, he contributed materially to the ensuing defeat of the enemy offensive. Sergeant Searles’ outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
